West Virginia’s rugged Allegheny Mountains are emblematic of the state’s raw natural beauty. The state is well known for its fantastic whitewater rafting, particularly in the New River Gorge National River. Hiking and biking in West Virginia’s canyons are also favorite activities. Camping and backpacking in Monongahela National Forest is excellent and there are hundreds of miles of trails to enjoy. West Virginia is not known for its cities, but places like Harpers Ferry are wonderful places to learn about the state’s rich history, especially in regards to the American Civil War.
